Hey, writers! For those of you new to my blog, welcome! I’m a fantasy writer and blogger here at Whimsies of a Nerd Girl. Let me just say I’m glad to have you here today and I hope that I can help you along in your own story writing needs!
Today I want to discuss the importance revolving around author theme. Author theme can help us write about our deepest fears, desires, and struggles. We can’t create a book theme until we figure out what our own personal author theme is and if we don’t know what our book theme is, then we don’t have a clear purpose of why exactly we’re writing our story.
Personally, a huge part of my own author theme has to do with “change” and how we overcome our internal struggles. There are so many ways to portray this in a novel, whether it has to do with your protagonist, antagonist, or even the antihero. Change can be shown through a positive or negative way. Without change, our characters would not be moving forward and their life events would pretty much have no meaning. In other words, theme in a novel gives the reader something to think about and consider. It makes the audience break down barriers in their own lives so they can relate to the story and possibly even gain value to personal struggles.
Some examples of story themes can be:
- Good prevails over evil
- To fight despite your fear
- Nature vs. nurture
I hope my list of examples gave you some type of insight into choosing a theme for not only your author theme, but your work in progress’s theme as well. The reason it’s so important to align yourself with your own author theme is because it forces you to make sense of your own life struggles. When you put a reoccurring theme into your novels it gives your audience a sense of comfort for them to continuously read your work and find the same themes running throughout them. This can give them something to look forward to when picking up your next book. When a new reader discovers the theme in your novel they can better relate to both you and your stories. If a reader can find their self doing this, they can become a true fan.
Have you discovered your personal author theme or moral of your story?
Until next time!
